Voltiris and Genson Group Launch the Netherlands’ First Hectare-Scale Spectral-Filtering Solar Project for Strawberry Production

Voltiris and Genson Group Launch the Netherlands’ First Hectare-Scale Spectral-Filtering Solar Project for Strawberry Production

Voltiris will equip Genson Group, a Bakker Barendrecht grower, with its spectral filtering modules, generating 25 kWh of renewable electricity per m² per year directly from the greenhouse.

The project builds on strawberry trials in which Voltiris delivered a 26% increase in premium fruit yield. For strawberry cultivation, the agronomic potential is proven. Results from trials at Delphy IC and Proefcentrum Hoogstraten have validated the positive impact of the system. Strawberries under Voltiris' modules remain cooler, increasing yield in the premium category by up to 26%. To bring these benefits to the operational scale, Voltiris and Genson will install almost 2,000 modules, covering 1 hectare in Genson's state-of-the-art strawberry greenhouse.

Quality throughout the supply chain

"Delivering top-quality strawberries in a sustainable way is at the core of our mission" says Bart Goorts, co-owner and operational manager of Genson's Someren and de'n Broekkant locations. Genson has spent six decades building expertise in premium soft fruit. Operating across 16 production sites in the Netherlands, the business produces strawberries year-round and supplies both fresh fruit to retail and young plants to professional growers across Europe.

"A cooler and more stable climate during peak summer leads to larger high quality berries and more predictable harvest timing, while the on-site energy generation adds to the sustainability profile of the operation as a whole", Bart adds.

Genson is a key supplier to Bakker Barendrecht, Albert Heijn's strategic partner for fresh fruit and vegetables. The project with Voltiris fits directly with Bakker's focus on quality and sustainability. "We see electrification as a key element towards sustainable food production. This trial improves product quality while simultaneously supporting our ambition to reduce CO2", says Ron van de Water, R&D Expert at Bakker Barendrecht, a Greenyard company. "Voltiris offers an exciting combination of a reduced carbon footprint with an increase in quality. Such opportunities have to be seized."

Scaling across Europe

The Genson project arrives on the back of Voltiris' most active period to date. In May 2025 the company completed its first hectare-installation in tomato cultivation at Meier Gemüse near Zurich in Switzerland, integrating nearly 2,000 spectral filtering modules across a commercial greenhouse in just four weeks within a fully operational facility. Since then, Voltiris is on track to install over 20,000 modules in 2026, which are currently being produced and shipped to operational projects in The Netherlands, Belgium, France and Switzerland.

The project is planned for installation in the summer of 2026 and will be fully operational from September onwards. This project is made possible by a grant from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO).
